British Values

Woodkirk Academy places a high value on diversity and inclusion of all background and characteristic of all students and their families. Throughout the year Woodkirk Academy celebrates inclusion and diversity of all.

In celebrating inclusion and diversity, each celebration and awareness are underpinned by the Fundamental British Values of, Tolerance, Respect, Liberty, Democracy & Rule of Law. 

Assemblies followed a thematic plan that celebrate and raise the awareness of different aspects of inclusion and diversity to ensure that all students are spiritually, morally, culturally and socially developing. This is then followed up through the Form Time Programme and/or lessons.

The PSHRE curriculum explores a diverse range of faiths and culture to promote a wider understanding of Christianity as the traditional Great British religion that co-exists alongside other faiths and non-faith (secular worldviews).

Geography delves into aspects of population movement and scarcity of resources and the impact both positive and negative that migration can have.

The History curriculum has a strong focus on the development of Britain through the ages and how we are shaped as a society.

During the month of October through Black History month, all subjects across the Academy will make curriculum links to Black History narratives within each subject.

During the month of January through Holocaust Awareness month, all subjects across the Academy will make curriculum links to the Holocaust and the impact that the Holocaust has had on 21st Century life.

During the month of March through International Women’s Awareness, all subjects across the Academy will make curriculum links to showcase the notable achievements of women in subject areas.

During the month of June through Pride Awareness month, all subjects across the Academy will make curriculum links to showcase LGBTQ+ achievements in subject areas.

Throughout the year Woodkirk Academy celebrates religious festivities by decorating the front of school in the festive decoration and holding a festive meal to celebrate the festive occasion.

During the month of Ramadan staff and students will come together to hold an Iftar event, where the break of fast is done together, Muslim and non-Muslim.

In Form Time students have a weekly Personal Development session that is through Votes for Schools, where students discuss a topical issue and then have the democratic opportunity to vote on this. Votes that are cast are sent to those of influence to help shape change for the future, taking on board the voice of students today.

In Form Time each morning students have a themed reflection that is part of their Daily Act of Collective Worship – this is reflected upon through the Fundamental British Values.
